TWO women were rescued by firefighters from a blaze at a Salisbury flat on Tuesday night.

The blaze at the first-floor flat in Fisherton Street broke out just after 7pm and was tackled by 20 firefighters from Salisbury, Wilton and Devizes.

One of the rescued women was taken to hospital by ambulance and the other was treated at the scene by ambulance and fire crews.

The fire was quickly contained using two hosereel jets and a team of firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, checked the remainder of the building and made sure it was safely evacuated.

Crews also used positive pressure ventilation fans to assist in clearing smoke from the premises and a thermal imaging camera to check for hot spots.

Incident Commander Tim Gray said: "The first crews to arrive really did a superb job. The rescues were the highest priority and a much more serious outcome was avoided by their prompt actions."

A Wiltshire fire & Rescue Service fire investigation team is looking into the cause of the fire.
