RINGWOOD Carnival was back with a bang this afternoon as the popular one-day event returned for the first time since the pandemic.
Thousands lined the streets of the historic market town to witness the procession – featuring dancers, drummers and even Del Boy.
The event returned at 2pm when the crowds gave a minute’s applaud and cheer for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate and thank her for her service to the nation.
Organisers made the decision to go ahead with the event on Saturday, September 17 following the Queen’s death last week after liaising with the New Forest District Council and checking government advice.
First up, with a rumble in the distance, was the roaring sound of the motorbikes as the procession made its way down Christchurch Road, High Street and Market Place.
Cheerleaders, lorries, bagpipers, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Only Fools and Horses, marching bands, tractors and a boxing chicken all took part in the performances as thousands along the street smiled with glee.
Several groups, including schools and marching bands, walked round with collection boxes for people to donate money towards.
Carnival chair Ben Salsbury said: “Today has been an absolutely fantastic day. There has been a really good community spirit here today as we return from two years away due to the pandemic.
“We’re hoping to raise lots of money for different causes and, of course, we are here to celebrate the life of the Queen.”
Event organiser Alix Gardner added: “We’ve had great weather for it this year and it is fantastic to be back after two years away.
“Everybody has clearly been enjoying themselves: people are smiling and look so happy, and when everybody clapped for the Queen it was so lovely.
“Ringwood Carnival is always popular, I heard around 10,000 people come through Ringwood during the event.”
An evening parade will take place with an illuminated procession beginning at 7.15pm, concluding with a fireworks display at 9.30pm to close the day with a bang.
Organisers from Ringwood Carnival Society also lined up a host of activities, competitions, displays, entertainment, stalls andfairground rides at this year’s extravaganza.
