Riding to the rescue

THREE young boys are being hailed as heroes for their quick-thinking actions in coming to the rescue of a badly injured grandmother.

Jordan Dovey, Sam Bowles and Oscar Cryan, who are all 14, were out cycling in Cowesfield, near Whiteparish, when they heard cries for help from someone in a nearby garden.

An 89-year-old woman, who lives alone and who has asked not to be identified, had fallen and badly cut her hand, and had lain in the cold unable to get up for as long as an hour and a half.

The boys, who are all from nearby Sherfield English, rushed to help her, administering first aid, calling an ambulance and comforting her while they waited for paramedics to arrive.

The woman's grateful daughter, nurse Sandy Rossiter, said: "Teenagers get such a bad press but these boys were so good.

"They did everything right and I'm so grateful to them. She could have died if no-one had found her."

Oscar, who had learnt some first aid while an army cadet at Downton, had cut his own arm badly in February and remembered an injured limb should be elevated and wrapped up.

He administered first aid while Jordan and Sam waited outside for the ambulance to arrive and Oscar then travelled in the ambulance with the woman to make sure she was alright.

He said: "I asked if she wanted me to go with her because she was all alone. I was glad we found her because it was freezing and she might not have made it if no-one came past."

Mrs Rossiter said her mother, who underwent surgery on her arm on Wednesday, is recovering well and is extremely grateful to the youngsters for the care they gave her.
