A NEW initiative set up by Age UK is being trialled to help older people to travel independently.

The aim of Travel Friends is to reduce loneliness for those who are socially isolated as many older people lost confidence during the pandemic and may need support if to travel independently again.

Services manager at Age UK, Ginny Cooper, said: “We are so excited about this service and how it can really make a difference to those older people who are struggling with isolation. Many people have lost their confidence to travel independently to their usual activities and clubs and are missing out on vital social connections.

“This is a wonderful volunteering opportunity to make a real difference. By volunteering just once or twice a week, for about 4 weeks for each client, you would be providing tailored, individual support to help someone."

The service is supported by volunteers working with an older person over a short period of time to help them understand bus or train timetables as well as any community transport schemes.

Initially, volunteers will travel with the client to help them feel much more confident when travelling alone. Volunteers receive training for this role and are supported by staff members.
