FIVE years ago today, Salisbury was almost brought to a standstill as heavy snow covered the city.

The Beast from the East combined with Storm Emma on Thursday March 1 and Friday, March 2 to produce inches of the white stuff, with some drifts several feet deep.

Children and adults alike took to the city’s parks and open spaces to enjoy the snow-days.

The majority of local schools were closed, and businesses either remained shut or closed their doors throughout the day as the weather worsened.

People were using sledges, skis and even snowboards at Hudson’s Field, and many took part in snowball fights, made snow angels or built snowmen and igloos across the city and south Wiltshire.

The roads became impassable in some places, with drivers abandoning their vehicles, and others coming to the rescue by pushing or towing cars.
