AN EXHIBITION of art raised hundreds of pounds for a good cause, despite fears that it might not go ahead due to a lack of work.

The Avon and Bourne Valley Art Exhibition hosted its 11th annual art exhibition in Figheldean Village Hall on May 13 and 14.

Richard Horner, an ABVA spokesman, said: “A week away from the event we had concerns at the lack of submissions but on the day we had a healthy 160 exhibits on display."

The group sold 31 pieces, of which 10 per cent went to charity.

Donations from the visiting public as well as funds raised through the Sue Woodbridge memorial raffle and returns from the refreshment sales meant a total of £1,000 was collected for Salisbury District Hospital’s charity Stars Appeal.

The best in show prize, voted by the viewing public, was won by Garry Peerless for his picture of a barn owl, and the Sue Woodbridge memorial raffle prize, of an original painting (by local artist Frank Grimes), was won by Phillip Partington of Cheltenham.

Richard added: "Many thanks to the exhibiting artists, the support crew and the visiting public for making the weekend such a roaring success."
