PLANS are under consultation to convert a disused historic water pumping station and reservoir into housing.

Wessex Water applied for permission to develop land at 191 Devizes Road, an old waterworks site on June 6.

Proposals seek to demolish the existing house and covered reservoir to allow Nest Homes to build five new houses.

The existing pumphouse would also be converted to create two dwellings, one with a single bedroom and the other with two bedrooms.

Access to the site would also be changed.

In a document submitted to Wiltshire Council, Elaine Milton Heritage and Planning said the pumping station is "clearly an ongoing liability".

While Wessex Water repairs and maintains the building, the north west walls are currently showing signs of damp and the building is increasingly at risk from further damage and decay, according to a statement of significance report.

The Grade II listed pumping station has been described as "redundant" and that it will "almost certainly" never be used again for its original purpose.

Despite this, the special interest of the Devizes Road Water Treatment Works derives from its age, external form, architectural treatment and materials.

There are still machines inside the building but the original stream engine and pumping machine are gone.
