Home to the best-preserved copy of only four surviving 1215 Magna Carta documents, Salisbury Cathedral is celebrating Magna Carta Day with two Facebook Live question and answer sessions.

Magna Carta Day on Thursday, June 15 will mark 808 years since the Great Charter was sealed.

As part of the celebrations, the Cathedral will host a Facebook Live session with Salisbury Cathedral arts curator Beth Hughes at 9am where she will discuss and answer questions about Cornelia Parker’s Magna Carta (An Embroidery), the centrepiece of this year’s summer art exhibition at the Cathedral, ‘To Be Free: Art and Liberty.’

Salisbury Cathedral’s archivist Emily Naish will hold a later Facebook Live session at 4.30pm in which she will discuss and answer questions about the original 1215 Magna Carta document and the new exhibition of the charter at the Cathedral.

The Magna Carta was sealed by King John at Runnymede on Monday, June 15, 1215 and the copy now displayed at the Salisbury Cathedral was delivered to the old cathedral at Old Sarum soon afterward.

The charter contains clauses which specify that the monarch is not above the law and individual rights and freedoms adopted by later charters such as the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen and the American Declaration of Independence.

The copy of the Magna Carta at the Salisbury Cathedral is one of only four still in existence. Two of the others are held by the British Library, while one is on display at Lincoln Cathedral.
