Exeter House Special School has retained its ‘Good’ rating following an ungraded inspection from Ofsted.

After visiting Exeter House Special School on Monday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 15, Ofsted said that “every pupil is seen as individual and unique in this school” and “pupils arrive at school full of joy and anticipation for the day ahead.”

Ofsted further complimented the efforts of the school to prepare pupils in the longer term to move on to future training courses or employment.

The report said: “All through their school experience, staff focus on what pupils need to have to make informed choices about what to do when they leave school. This focus starts in the early years and in the complex needs class. It continues through to the vocational centre. Here, the curriculum is intensely focused on preparing students for independent living and the world of employment.”

Although inspectors had little negative to say about the school, all Ofsted reports contain a section on what a school can do to improve. In the case of Exeter House Special School, inspectors simply gave advice on how school staff can effectively move forward with changes that are in their infancy.

The report said: “Work to sharpen the link between assessment information and teaching is very new. Therefore, its impact has yet to be seen, particularly in raising pupils’ academic outcomes. Leaders need to ensure that the approach used leads to teaching that matches pupils’ academic potential precisely so that all achieve as well as they might.”

Headteacher Matt Sambrook said he was delighted with the outcome of the inspection.

He said: "This is a tremendous affirmation of the hard work and fabulous teamwork at Exeter House Special School. I am incredibly proud of the pupils and our staff."
