THE A303 is back open after nearly 24 hours, following a "serious" crash near Stonehenge, in which a woman in her 60s died.

The main road remained closed in both directions overnight as police continued to investigate the crash which happened just before 10am on Tuesday, January 23.

National Highways closed the A303 between the Longbarrow and Countess roundabouts near Stonehenge involving a lorry and a car.

Eastbound traffic was diverted via the A360, B3086 and A345 to rejoin the A303 at the Countess roundabout, with the westbound diversion operating in reverse.

With Wiltshire Police investigations anticipated to last beyond the Wednesday morning peak, National Highways is advising drivers to plan ahead and to consider alternative routes where possible.
