BURGLERS broke into a bank during an 'attempted' raid and its cash machines remain out of action.

Nationwide, in Amesbury, was broken into by the would-be thieves on Monday, February 5.

The burglars entered through the bank's main entrance on Salisbury Street and attempted to steal the cash machines but reportedly ran off after they were startled.

The cash machines remain temporarily out of action, eight days after the incident, but the bank is still open.

A Nationwide spokesperson said: “Despite an attempted raid our Amesbury branch remains open as usual, but the cash machines remain temporarily out of action.

"Customers can visit the branch counter to make a withdrawal or use the ATM in the Co-Op next door.”

Nationwide Building Society is the only bank left in the town, serving a population of more than 10k, after Lloyds closed two years ago.

The company recently vowed to keep its 'high street presence' until at least 2026.

Wiltshire Police was contacted for more information.
