THE battle of the supermarkets is hotting up in Amesbury as plans by both Tesco and Asda are set to be the subject of a public inquiry.
Both supermarket giants had their planning applications for new stores in the town approved by Salisbury District Council in May, but they have now been called in' by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
The proposals will be considered at a public inquiry because of their "local importance" and that they may "conflict with national policy".
Council officers had advised councillors the plans should be turned down because they breach policy on out-of-town shopping development but the northern area committee voted unanimously in favour of both planning applications.
