Southern Water is seeking consent to install solar panels at a wastewater treatment works to reduce its demand in the local electricity network.

The company has submitted an application relating to a 1.8 hectare site at the works off Milford Road in Pennington.

The proposed development aims to supply the facility with 28 per cent of its annual electricity needs.

A planning statement accompanying the application says Southern Water want to help tackle climate change by becoming net zero by 2050.

"Part of the strategy is to use renewable electricity to power their sites at source and thereby reduce their demand on the local electricity network.

"Southern Water customers have told them that tackling climate change is important to them, and the regular OFGEM wants Southern Water to do more, going further and faster on renewable energy."

The proposed development aims to provide the works with 860 kilowatts of renewable energy.

"Construction of the solar photovoltaic (PV) array will take approximately 12 weeks. The panels and their supporting frames will be lightweight fabrications and hence heavy plant and machinery will not be required.
