THE long-serving captain of the 1st Amesbury Girls' Brigade has been given an award from the town council for her outstanding service to the community.

Gillian Clarke, 65, has been a part of the Girls' Brigade for 34 years at Amesbury, spending 20 of those as captain of the troop.

Mayor Dennis Brown presented her with her award at the full council meeting held on Tuesday and said that 34 years of service definitely deserved an award.

Gillian, who described herself as honoured' to have received it, said: "I am absolutely amazed.

"When the mayor rang me I thought he was going to give me some money for the Girls' Brigade, so I really am lost for words."

Gillian was in the Girls' Brigade as a little girl and has been helping out since becoming active lieutenant in September 1974.

In September 1988, she stepped forward and took over to become captain of the troop, a position she has carried on and enjoyed ever since.

She describes it as hard work and a lot of paper work, but said she loves doing it as she loves working with children.
