IT might not have been a marathon, but every step that Ray Barnes completed in the sponsored charity walk he helped organise was a demonstration of grit.

Former civil engineer Ray is a resident of Glenside Manor where he is undergoing treatment for a brain injury sustained in a woodland mountain bike ride in 2001.

He currently lives in one of Glenside's independent living bungalows and has been training hard for the event, determined not to use a wheelchair to cover the short distance from the start line to his bungalow.

He persuaded nine other residents to test themselves to the limits as they walked varying distances to raise money for charity.

Some managed a few hundred metres and others completed three laps of the Glenside site in South Newton, raising about £600 for four charities.

The walkers had elected to give to the money to the brain injury charity Headway, children's charity Barnardo's and PAT (Pets as Therapy).

Money will also go to Anna's Room, a charity founded by the parents of one of Glenside's residents, Anna, who has suffered several episodes of encephalitis and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

Anna's Room raises money to provide multi-sensory equipment for use in rehabilitation.
