THIEVES have made off with an 8ft-tall model fisherman which has proved a popular talking point in the streets of Salisbury since his arrival in the city.

The fisherman, who wears a long yellow raincoat and is holding a fish, disappeared from outside Stoby’s Fish Bar in Market Place between 7.45pm and 8.30pm.

Shop owner, Leuene Jackman, whose family has run Stoby’s shops for 34 years, said the shop was open at the time but no one saw anything untoward.

“I had a real shock when I saw he was gone,” she said. “It would have taken at least two people to carry him because he’s so big and awkward and you think you would notice if you saw something like that being carried through the streets of Salisbury.”

The giant fisherman has travelled around the country as the Stoby’s mascot, first standing outside the shop the family used to run in Richmond and Slough before coming to Salisbury.
