Plan to close entrance at railway station

SOUTH West Trains has submitted a planning application that could see the closure of the northern entrance to Salisbury railway station.

The company wants to install a row of ticket barriers in the main concourse of the station and put up security fencing around all five platforms.

This would see the closure of the second entrance to the station, which the train firm says is used by less than 10 per cent of passengers.

However the Salisbury Campaign for Better Transport has opposed the plan, claiming that for people arriving at the station from the north of the city, who already have their tickets, the northern entrance is more convenient.

Campaigners also say the northern entrance is key to the vision of providing a bus/rail interchange as it is closer to the bus stops on Fisherton Street.

A consultation period is now underway and comes to an end on April 30.

I think I must be one of the 10% mentioned.I cycle down to the station on the cyclepath nr. Waitrose and then cut thro' the (usually)traffic-fre
e Spire View. Then I cross at the lights and wheel my bicycle into the station by the back entrance to emerge on the other side by the bike stands. This is safe and easy in all weathers and all times of the day and evening.Having only lived here a year,I've tried the route along under the bridge, around the r.about at the end of Fisherton Street and up to the front entrance of the station.Scary, indeed
!(It's too narrow to push one's bike along the raised pavement under the railway bridge either side.I know.I've tried that way too!)I can understand SW Trains putting a barrier but what about me and that 10% of passengers.Don't we matter? (Yes I have a car but I prefer to travel to London,S'hampton airport etc.in as "Green" a mode as I can.
