HOUSEHOLDERS in the New Forest are being urged to take extra care when disposing of broken glass or ceramics in refuse sacks.

The alert from New Forest District Council follows an incident when a waste operative was badly cut by sharp shards of glass which had been put into a black sack for the council’s kerbside refuse collection.

Residents are asked to wrap up any broken glass or ceramics, such as smashed plates or mugs, in thick newspaper and secure the parcel before placing it into a refuse sack.

Glass bottles and jars should always be disposed of at a local bottle bank.

The council’s environment portfolio holder Edward Heron said: “We would urge all the district’s householders to ensure that any sharp or hazardous waste is disposed of carefully and with consideration for the waste operatives who may come into contact with it.”
