A SECOND hand clothing centre which gives handouts to homeless and vulnerable people in Salisbury might be forced to close unless it can find new accommodation.

Kitted Out! – which opened in July - is a project run by Salisbury charity Alabaré.

It provides good quality second hand clothing and household items to people in need who are referred from other agencies.

The project is currently run from Alabaré’s premises on Barnard Street but the building is being redeveloped and new accommodation must be found for safety reasons.

In the last two months 700 items have been issued to homeless and vulnerable people and 60 people have been helped, including 20 children.

In June Alabaré was given planning permission to demolish and rebuild its Damascus House centre and replace the outdated building with a purpose-built hostel, offering better accommodation and training facilities for the homeless.

Although the Kitted Out! service will be able to move back to Barnard Street once the building work is completed in April 2011, it might have to close in the meantime unless new premises can be found.

“If a suitable venue can’t be found in time, this worthwhile service may have to be suspended whilst the works are taking place,” said an Alabaré spokesman.

“Alabaré would like to avoid this happening as Kitted Out! provides invaluable support to many vulnerable people in the local area.”

The charity is looking for a large open space where goods can be displayed and the building must be accessible to all.

Kitted Out! is currently open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
