FROM onions to tomatoes to carrots, colourful vegetables competed along with pretty flowers at the late flower and vegetable show held by the New Forest and District Dahlia and Chrysanthemum Society on Saturday.

Organiser Clayton Beale estimated there were about 200 visitors through the doors of the village hall in St Leonards.

He said: “I think it was the best crowd we have had. It was exceptional. We are really, really pleased.”

The exhibitors excelled themselves with displays of first class vegetables and flowers and there were five national chrysanth exhibitors coming from all over the south of England.

Some of the trophies won included The Brame Trophy for the best exhibit of chrysanthemums, which went to husband and wife team Steve and Stella Joyce.

Mr Joyce also won the Albert Gray Trophy and the Andrews cup for his flowers.

Alderbury resident Keith Whitmarsh won the Pool cup for his chrysanthemums, Arthur Smith from Ringwood won the trophy for the best exhibit for his fantasy chrysanthemums and Dave Shergold from Woodfalls won the most points in the vegetable category.
