THE number of crimes being reported in Dorset has fallen to an eleven year low while Dorset Police continues to have the highest public confidence levels of any force in England and Wales, according to figures released this week.

Total crime dropped in Dorset by 4.8 per cent comparing crime figures from 2008/09 to 2009/10 – the fourth consecutive year that total crime has fallen in the county.

There have also been significant decreases in violent crime, robbery and vehicle crime – with violent crime dropping by 5.5 per cent, robbery falling by 16.8 per cent and vehicle crime by 7.4 per cent.

The crime statistics covering April 2009 to March 2010 are contained in the annual performance report, which was presented to the Dorset Police Authority on Thursday.

Assistant Chief Constable Mike Glanville said: “We are very encouraged by the continuing fall in crime across Dorset making it one of the safest areas in the country to live.

“In particular, the fall in violent crime and disorder in our town centres is to be welcomed. Throughout the year, we have worked very hard with our partners in local authorities, licensing trade and the health service to reduce the level of violence and anti-social behaviour and I am pleased to say that this work is paying off with very significant reductions in these types of incidents.

“Our public confidence levels remain the highest in the country and we are determined to continue providing the very best service to our communities.”

However, domestic burglary has increased by 1.1 per cent over the year and the number of serious sexual offences being reported has risen by 13.6 per cent.

“This is also a very important priority for the Force and one which we take very seriously,” said Mr Glanville.

“The number of historic reports of rape have also increased this year with some investigations stretching back over many years. Over 50 per cent of all reported rapes relate to historic offences.

“Victims of serious sexual assault continue to receive the very best service from dedicated and well trained staff when reporting these types of crimes and they should have confidence in the very professional response that we are now able to provide.”
