A NEW treatment for infection control is set to be trialled at Salisbury District Hospital.

The process involves putting an antimicrobial agent through with the washing in the laundry, which coats the fabric and is claimed to last for about 30 to 50 washes.

The Organic Medical Clothing Company, based in Southampton, is providing the hospital with the treatment, which is imported from the USA.

Sales director Nik Powell said the additive kills bacteria on contact, acting as a barrier to prevent cross-contamination, and is 100 per cent environmentally friendly and safe.

The company, which is the only Fairtrade certified uniform supplier to the NHS, is also providing uniforms for the hospital’s laundry drivers.

The polo shirts, which will have the Fairtrade logo on the front, are the first of their kind to be used in hospitals in this country.

Mr Powell said the shirts are better value and are ethically procured, with a percentage of the profits the company makes going straight to Fairtrade.
