VIKINGS and Saxons besieged the village of Cranborne last weekend for a special open day.

The Ancient Technology Centre played host to families eager to snap up Viking crafts and have a go at making their own, as well as to see the fantastic longboat and the finished longhouse.

Visitors saw demonstrations and took part in hands-on activities and Vikings displayed their skills and courage on the battlefield.

Viking group Hrafnslith – the Troop of the Raven – showed off their battle skills and taught youngsters how to make amulets and weave.

One visitor to the show said: “It was brilliant – the whole event really transported you back in time.

“I had never been to the centre before, but I definitely will make the effort again.”

The event was held in conjunction with the Festival of British Archaeology, which is linked to a number of events around the region.
