AFTER witnessing the impact a stroke had on a close friend of hers, Salisbury woman Penny Fooks decided to run a half marathon for a charity working to combat the condition.

Penny, a clinical psychologist, wanted to help the Stroke Association as a tribute to close friend Claire McDonald, who was 49 when she suffered a life-altering stroke last year.

“It was very difficult to see her go through such tough times,” said Penny, 48, who is aiming to raise at least £350 for the cause. “She’s a fighter though. She has been such an inspiration in overcoming her challenges.”

The half marathon, called Run to the Beat, involved participants being serenaded by different artists, bands and a Ministry of Sound album, as event organisers believe music positively influences a runner’s preparation and performance.

Penny, who trained four days a week in preparation for the event on Sunday, has completed smaller races before, but never the 13.1miles required for a half marathon.

Mrs McDonald said: “Penny is an inspiration because she is not a trained runner, she’s never done this kind of race before.

“I am humbled that she has chosen me, along with a worthy cause, to do this for.”
