IT was a day of celebration in Durrington on Wednesday as postal services returned to the village after four years.

The village’s post office closed in 2006, much to the disappointment of local residents and town councillors, who have been campaigning ever since to get some postal services back.

Now, thanks to funding from Plain Action and support from Community First, a new post point has been opened at the village hall.

Councillor Graham Wright, who was instrumental in applying for the funding, said: “I am delighted to be part of such a positive scheme.

“The return of these services is a real boost for local people and, while it is not a Post Office, it can deliver a variety of essential services for Durrington.”

The new post point means people can now weigh and post parcels and letters, buy stamps, post items via recorded and special delivery and use online internet services.

The service will initially run in the clerk’s office from 10am to 12noon on Tuesdays and Fridays, but will hopefully be extended to five days a week in the future.
