Wilts & Dorset loses park and ride contract

First published in News by

WILTS & Dorset has lost its £1.5million contract to run Salisbury’s park and ride buses.

The service will be taken over by a family-run company from Chippenham in June.

Hatts Travel plans to bring in a new fleet of ‘green’ buses with low emissions to reduce pollution in the city.

The 20 drivers who work on park and ride will transfer to the new company with their terms of employment protected.

More changes are possible. A report is being drawn up on proposals to charge park and ride users on a per-passenger rather than a per-vehicle basis.

Wilts & Dorset managing director Alex Carter said price was the crucial factor in Wiltshire Council’s decision on the competing tenders. The council subsidised the service to the tune of £1.2million last year.

The company’s other operations in south Wiltshire are not affected.

Mr Carter said: “I am disappointed, but we can hold our heads high and say we have done a good job.”

Karma for re-routing and axing buses in the Amesbury/Larkhill/Du
rrington area maybe!
Leaving school kids and the elderly with a significant walk to their nearest bus stops. And many people late for work or school. Well done Mr Carter!

It is about time something was done regarding this terrible company. The arrogance of W&D has been a major problem for years due to their virtual monopoly of the Salisbury area.

The number of times I have had buses drive straight past me, not turn up or be late on regular occasions is ridiculous. When living in Tidworth I complained about the service I used to get to work in Salisbury as it was at least 15 minutes late EVERY day. Their reply "get an earlier bus".

The best thing that could happen for this area is some competition in terms of bus companies, maybe then we will see less rude drivers, better service and lower prices. £6 + for a return to Salisbury is obscene.

I have been told; that Wilts & Dorset might still have a chance to keep this service; the new company is based in swindon/chippenham so they would have to find a yard in/near salisbury to keep the buses overnight.
Overall; I think this is a change for the good; a few more contract losses and the message might kick in to W&D

As only one of the park and ride sites is logical, viable and useful, the one at Wilton, the others are too close to Salisbury to be of any use. It's not surprising that W and D have lost the contract, it's a dead horse. As for 'competition' in public transport as promoted by Thatcher and co? Err... W and D have a monopoly on public transport in salisbury. that's 'competition' ?

I can't help but feel the other people who have commented on this story have missed the point entirely. It is not about the service standard of Wilts and Dorset slipping, it is not about rude bus drivers (as the park and ride drivers are very pleasant) and it is not about what Park and Ride site is the best. I personally use the Beehive site and without this option I would have to pay the disgusting prices the council are charging to park in the city. Realistically the only concerns arising from this story is (in no particular order):
1) Is it going to affect the service/frequency/op
ening times of the Park and Ride
2) Are the prices going to up because of W&D losing the contract
3) What on Earth is all this about proposals to pay per passenger?!?! So much for car sharing!!

I finish work after 9pm most nights; including bank holidays and sundays.
I'd really like a half hour/hourly service from 7- say 10pm?
Not all of us have a 9-5 job...

Exeter run their P & R on a pay per passenger rate out of interest. No charge for the car park, but you pay on the bus per person. Can't remember what the fare was now.

Why are the Journal not reporting the real local news. In as much as communities in the Amesbury, Larkhill & Durrington area have been severley affected by changes to some of their services/routes that Wilts & Dorset have recently made. Many people are in uproar and no one covers the story!

I use the London & Southampton
Road sites. I have a Free Bus pass, but, I don't think I have a right to abuse these services, which is freely abused by many car drivers, who produce a bus pass & their 6 or 7 passengers travel free of charge. How could any business or organisation make a profit when it's services are allowed to be used this way. It's a shame that the those in charge have no real business experience, and are sat comfortably in
their offices while others lose their jobs
I'm sure there is a lot more services where cuts could be applied. W&D are not the problem, Just a very badly run organisation. General disrespect for Council Tax Payers. It's their money after all that's been squandered.
