A MAN from Salisbury was given a conditional discharge by magistrates in Salisbury after admitting stealing a sandwich from the One Stop shop in Wilton.

The court heard on Thursday that 27-year-old Dean Andrew Cooper went into the shop at about 7.15pm on July 18 with two other men and selected an all day breakfast sandwich from the fridge before leaving without paying.

When arrested by police on August 25, Cooper, of Exeter Street, said he was homeless and hungry at the time of the incident and that he had no money.

Will Griffiths, defending, told the court Cooper has a string of previous convictions that can be blamed on drug addiction but that since the incident in question he has successfully completed a drug rehabilitation programme.

Cooper was conditionally discharged for 12 months.
