A YEAR of “outstandingly high” results was celebrated by Bishop Wordsworth’s School at the annual prizegiving at Salisbury Cathedral. Dr Stuart Smallwood praised the students for this summer’s GCSE and A-level results and congratulated staff for encouraging the youngsters to achieve.

He said: “Thus far being an academy seems to offer this school exactly what it needs to develop excellence further and at the same time this in no way means division from other schools.”

He spoke of the “excellent working relationship” with South Wilts Grammar School and said Bishop Wordsworth’s will work more closely than ever with other local schools in coming years.

He also spoke of the “superb” results achieved by a group of Year 10 maths students who took their IGCSE papers this summer, a year early and after just one year’s study.

He said their results – 20 A*s and seven As between them – were “a real confidence booster for the future” and that the school can look forward to “a future bright with possibilities”.

The main prizewinners were: Old Wordsworthian Prize, Chris McNulty; Headmaster’s Prize, Fred Howarth; the Deputy Headmaster’s Prize, George Denham; Sixth Form Carpenter Prize, Joe Dale and Jamie Gordon; Canon Myser’s Prize, Tom Pitt-Brooke, Ben Thorpe, Edward Ripley and Hugo Griffin.
