IT might have only been open a few days but the new sports hall at Avon Valley College is already attracting champions.
Sprinting star Laura Turner, who is a Commonwealth gold medallist and the second fastest British 100 metre runner ever, officially opened the new building and spoke to students about her sporting achievements.
Last Wednesday the venue hosted an indoor athletics festival organised by the Avon Valley Sports Partnership.
Pupils in years 2 and 6 from five primary schools competed in events including foam javelin, vertical jump, standing long jump, chest push and balance beam.
There were also relays, which were won by Figheldean primary and Durrington junior schools.
The event was also the start of an Olympic Torch relay around Amesbury.
Artists Andrew Rawlings and Michelle Topps, who created the town’s Ancestor sculpture, have made a mock Olympic Torch that will be passed between primary schools in the run up to the Games.
Netheravon School won the chance to have the torch first and it was handed to pupils Rhiann Coffert and Tom Armstrong by mayor of Amesbury Andy Rhind-Tutt.
