Fortnightly bin collections from next month

FORTNIGHTLY bin collections are coming into force next month.

From March 26, household and garden waste and recycling bins will be collected fortnightly from households in south Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Council says the move will mean all residents have the same level of service as well as improved recycling services.

The changes are coming in despite the government’s stated aim to keep weekly collections but Toby Sturgis, cabinet member for waste, said Wiltshire Council is different to other councils because it provides bigger bins and it is “doing everything the government thinks is good” such as raising recycling rates.

The council hopes the changes will help meet its objectives of reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill to below 25 per cent, from a current 37 per cent, and increase the recycling rate across the county from 41 per cent to more than 50 per cent.

Last year, the council paid £3.9million in landfill tax and by 2014 the tax will be increasing to £80 per tonne, from £56 per tonne.

Some residents in Salisbury will continue to have a weekly collection where properties do not have enough bin space to store rubbish for two weeks, such as flats above shops.

Residents of The Friary will get twice weekly collections of non-recyclable rubbish from bin compounds serving flats and parts of Bemerton Heath will continue to get a weekly collection.

The council is also introducing a non-chargeable garden waste service to residents in the south of the county March 26.

For those who signed up before December 2011, they will receive their green lidded bins throughout February and there is still time to sign up at wiltshire.gov.uk/gardenbin.

For large families or people with medical conditions, an additional bin capacity will be made available.

A collection calendar with information about all the changes will be sent out to residents from March 5.

I back onto Barnards Folly the wood on Bemerton Heath, we already have a large amount of rubbish illegally dumped in the wood. When fortnightly collections are brought in I am afraid that it will just become an unofficial rubbish tip, with Salisbury City council not having the funds or being willing to clean up the mess.

much the same as the parts of the folly that back onto houses in olivier close then which have been unofficial dumps for years!

I got dumped in the Folly many years ago. She left me for a banana salesman. Never got over that, especially when I see a bunch of bananas.

A cousin of Grape Vine, actually. Fruity and full bodied.

To compensate for the loss of 26 collections per annum will the council be replacing the current wheely bins with ones twice their size?

I'm looking forward to the balmy, warm days of summer with the foul stench of rotting rubbish as we await our fortnightly bin collection. Never mind, at least the rats will be happy.

Can a council representative explain how I can halve the amount of rubbish I have for collection please? I won't be fly-tipping, of course, but may need to have fortnightly bonfires if there are no other options available to us.

Also, I recently discovered that WC won't recycle - and don't want - many of the plastic containers I was putting in the bin but, in spite of that, my recycling bins are typically full on collection date.

At least the council have convinced somebody that this is the solution to the problem; just a shame it's not us as they issue their dictates which we must comply with.

Look on the bright side, the council 'operatives' will have more time to complete their rounds, which means:

They will be able to do their job with a bit more care picking up all the fly-away loose bits that don't quite make into the truck, rather than just standing on them or blindly leaving them by the roadside.

And even more exciting they will be able to spend time leaving the bins the correct way up, rather than on their side, upside down etc.

Lastly, and possibly the most risque of comments, should the 'operatives' encounter a piece of litter languishing on the street between properties or populous of bins they will be able to pick it up in the cosy, comforting knowledge that their work load has recently been halved.

Don't knock the bin men . The ones around our way are fantastic. they are usually cheery and polite.

Try handling other peoples rubbish in the pooring rain for the money they get and perhaps you could sympathise.

Perhaps if people picked their own litter up it would help.

I remember the days when you would have 1 medium sized dustbin for everything even with a family of 5!
So what's changed, the manufacturers and all their packaging, until we get them to sort out their act we will always have problems!
But no party ever will, as that is where their donations come from. Cynical, oh yes.

Years ago a lot of waste was put on the fire, but since the widespread introduction of gas and electric heating, we have blocked our chimneys and have to put out out combustible rubbish in our bins.

The result is fewer chimney fires, but more rubbish the local authority have to dispose of.

In addition, with more stuff bought on line, you get small items in large boxes, which means more waste. I had some small items delivered in a box so big we could have kept the dog in it. We cannot burn it, so it goes for re-cycling
