Military wives prove on song

MILITARY wives from the Salisbury Plain Choir are preparing to sing to their husbands before they deploy to Afghanistan.

The group of women were inspired to set up the choir last month after the success of Gareth Malone’s Military Wives Choir, who scooped the Christmas number one in the charts and have raised thousands of pounds for charity.

The choir’s rehearsals attract scores of women each week and they’re currently preparing to sing at a concert on March 15 at the Garrison Church of St George, Bulford, before many of their husbands deploy to Afghanistan in April.

Carol Musgrove, one of the organisers, said: “It’s going really well so far, we have nearly 80 people most weeks and we’re having a concert so the women can sing to their husbands before they go away.”

Also lined up for the event are local school choirs and a men’s choir from Pewsey.

Choir members say they are excited about the future and have already had requests from local bands keen to collaborate.

Over the next few months they’re hoping to sing to soldiers at Tedworth House and at an event to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

They have also been invited to sing at a number of different events to celebrate the Olympics in Amesbury and Bulford.

The group is rehearsing Wherever You Are, the Military Wives Choir’s number one song, with help from choirmaster Susan Raeburn, headteacher at Kiwi School, Bulford.

Mrs Raeburn said:“We’re delighted with how it’s gone so far and it’s good in that it gives them something positive to do in the run-up to their loved ones’ deployment.”

The singing sessions are held at Kiwi School,Bulford, at 7.30pm on Thursdays and anyone attached to the military is welcome to attend.
