PUPILS and staff at Bishop Wordworth’s School are set to feature in a BBC2 Arena film about the life of author William Golding.

Golding, who taught English at the school, won both the Booker and Nobel prizes for literature and is best known for Lord of the Flies, which was published in 1954 and has sold 20 million copies worldwide.

Golding wrote a further 11 novels and Arena has been given unique access to his extensive personal archive for the first film to be made since his death in 1993. Golding’s daughter, Judy Carver, and the boys of Bishop Wordsworth's School will feature in the production, as well as Old Wordsworthians and colleagues who were at the school during Golding’s time there. Filming took place last year and includes the annual Founder’s Day service in the cathedral as well as a lesson led by former member of staff John Cox, who is an expert on Golding’s works. The programme will be broadcast on Saturday, March 17 at 9pm.
