A NEW crossing to make it easier for pedestrians from Alderbury to Salisbury was officially opened on Wednesday.

The long awaited puffin crossing on the A36 Southampton Road between Petersfinger and Marshmead Close will make it safer and for people to get between the two places on foot.

Local people have long campaigned for the crossing and Wiltshire Council has been working with the Highways Agency to help make it happen. The council has contributed £23,000 to the new crossing.

Cabinet member for highways Dick Tonge said: “We hope making it safer to cross will encourage more people from the villages south of the city to walk or use the park and ride to help ease congestion on this very busy route.”

Puffin crossings use sensors to detect people on the crossing and adjust the red traffic signal according to the length of time that individual people need to cross. This gives pedestrians time to cross safely.

A puffin crossing will also detect if someone presses the button and crosses before the green man appears and it will stop drivers being held at the lights any longer than is necessary.
