PEOPLE are being urged to help keep a youth project afloat in a crowd-funding scheme that could be a national first.

The Unit, based in Endless Street, Salisbury is run almost entirely by volunteers and offers young people a place to meet up, get support and advice and take part in a range of projects.

Ruth Jones from the scheme said: “If the Friends scheme is successful The Unit thinks this will be a national first – a community will be supporting its own independent service for young people.”

But it is in desperate need of funding to keep going and is hoping the scheme will see the equivalent of 250 people and businesses sign up for £10 a month, which will enable it to become independent and self-supporting.

The scheme has already gained the support of Salisbury MP John Glen, along with several businesses and individuals ahead of its official launch today.

Ms Jones said: “In 25 years of working with services and projects for young people across the country I have never ever seen so much private and community support for a youth project, and such fantastic partnership support from local venues and organisations. I am astounded.

“Finding 250 people to sign up for a tenner a month is a tough challenge, but I believe we can do it.”

The project, which doesn’t get any reliable local government funding, has been able to attract grants for specific projects but needs to cover its basic overheads such as rent.

It offers young people the opportunity to gain qualifications, to take part in arts and music activities and to meet up and make new friends in a safe environment.
