KNITTING needles were clicking as a group of kind hearted souls in Salisbury got to work to help African babies.
The Retired Senior Voluntary Programme (RSVP) group, which meets once a month at the city’s Pembroke House, has made more than a hundred tiny hats and vests for newborn babies, who might otherwise only be wrapped in newspaper.
Barbara Eadle, from the group, said: “They call them fish and chip babies. They are leaving the medical centres in Africa wrapped in newspaper to protect them from the sun and the cold at night.”
The 20 members of the Salisbury group were touched by an article read in the Journal about Salisbury woman Sarah McCombe, 30, who set up the charity Ellotte Future Building to help orphans in Malawi and got in touch with her to see if they could join forces.
Miss McCombe collected the little outfits from Mrs Eadle on Tuesday and will take them back to Africa with her.
