INDEPENDENT businesses are asking Salisbury shoppers to spend at least £10 with them as plans for a forthcoing Independents’ Week move forward.

Customers will then be asked to report back on where they have spent their cash.

Several independent businesses are banding togetherto run the week-long campaign to promote independent, local traders in the city from July 2-9.

July 4 has been named as Independents’ Day, when independent shops will hold a host of events and promotions to entice shoppers.

Businesses from shops to hairdressers hope customers will use Facebook and Twitter to tell others how they have used independent traders throughout the week.

The campaign is on Facebook as Salisbury Independents’ Week and on Twitter as @SalisburyIndies.

Theresa Wood of The Strawberry Fox and Susi Mason of Casa Fina are leading the initiative in the face of increasing pressure on local retailers. “We heard about an initiative in Liskeard, Cornwall, where people were encouraged to spend £10 locally,” said Mrs Wood.

“We hope Salisbury residents and visitors can show the same support for independent businesses here in the first week of July and then year-round.”

Businesses taking part in Salisbury Independ-ents’ Week will display a poster with the Salisbury Independents’ logo and encourage customers to use other local traders throughout the week.
