A HUNGRY otter had to be rescued after turning up in an army camp kitchen at Tidworth barracks. Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital in Newton Tony was called after the discovery was made last night (Tuesday).

Kitchen staff at first thought their intruder was a mink and contacted pest control but after moving a dishwasher, which it had hidden behind, they saw the culprit was an otter. Marilyn Korkis from the hospital said: “It must have got itself in under the fence and was possibly hungry so headed for the kitchen.

“It was very stressed and was not a very happy otter at all.

“It must have come quite a distance over the Salisbury Plain as the River Avon is quite far away – it’s not in very good condition, it’s very thin but overnight it had some trout.”

The otter, which is thought to be about six months old, is now being cared for at the New Forest Otter and Owl Centre.”
