ON the day the Paralympics opened in London, Salisbury had its own special sporting event.
More than 80 people with learning disabilities took part in a series of contests, including walking and running races, egg and spoon race and sponge javelin throwing at Five Rivers Leisure Centre.
Just as in London, a large and enthusiastic crowd of supporters cheered the competitors on and applauded the awarding of gold, silver and bronze medals and trophies by city mayor John Collier and MP John Glen.
The event ended with a picnic provided by South Wilts Mencap. “The whole event truly enshrined the Olympic spirit,” said Mencap chairman John Walsh.
“Our members triumph over adversity every day; this was truly a celebration of their spirit and abilities. And it was a great partnership between the council and the charity.”
