Betting shop in planning battle
10:09am Saturday 1st September 2012 in News By Corey Ross
A BETTING firm has launched an appeal against the refusal of planning permission for a new betting office in Salisbury.
Coral Racing Ltd wanted planning permission to open a new shop in Bridge Street. But Wiltshire Council refused to grant a change of use from retail to betting office because of a policy requiring at least a third of establishments fronting the streets in that area to remain in retail use.
The street is a main route between the Cathedral Close, public transport hubs and the main city centre car park, and the council said allowing this application would undermine the retail function of the area.
The city council and three members of the public also raised objections to the plan.
Coral said the shop has been empty since November last year and is not in a prime shopping area but on a road where there are mainly restaurants, bars and cafés.
A planning inspector will now consider written statements from both parties before deciding whether the change of use should be allowed.
