A CHARITY that rescues stray dogs in Greece is hoping lots of people will bring their four-legged friends out for a fundraising walk next Sunday.
Former Greek stray dogs will be putting their best paws forward on a sponsored walk around Ringwood Forest at Ashley Heath, courtesy of the Forestry Commission, on the morning of Sunday, September 23.
The event has become an annual fundraiser for the Ringwood-based Strays of Greece, which rescues scores of hungry and neglected hounds each year.
The charity has just flown over 15 dogs, including Rasta, who was found by the charity’s volunteer vet looking like a hearthrug, and is now going to her new home in the UK after being clipped of 5lb of fur and cleaned up.
Another of the dogs, a poodle type called Teddy Bear, is wearing an Elizabethan collar after having to have an eye removed. She was hurled over the a wall of a zoo and attacked by other dogs.
Paul Martin, who stars in the BBC show Flog It! and other TV shows, is a patron of the charity and will be at the sponsored walk on Sunday, Dozens of dogs and their owners are set to enjoy the forest, with refreshments afterwards. The pets will all get a rosette and a treat.
Mr Martin, who owns dogs and horses, said: “This is an event I really look forward to.
“The charity does such fantastic work with injured and stray dogs and cats throughout Greece. And the thing I really love is that every penny is spent on the animals and none on salaries and administration. Everyone is a volunteer.
“I hope lots of people will come along – with or without a dog.”
Registration for the walk runs from 10.30am until midday at the Forestry Commission Office opposite the One Stop shop on Horton Road, Ashley Heath (BH24 2EJ).
There will be stalls, tombola, cakes and coffee and a barbecue. Everyone is welcome.
Sponsorship for your dog is £3 and walkers are encouraged to have their friends sponsor their dog too.
Sponsorship forms are online at straysofgreece.org or call 01425 478757 for information.
