New digital literacy scheme needs volunteers

A NEW scheme has been launched in Salisbury to help get people online. The digital literacy scheme will see volunteers offer their services to help anyone who is unsure of how to use computers and the internet, either in their own home or in libraries.
Wiltshire Council is looking for volunteers to become ‘digital champions’ to help people of all ages to get online. Cllr Richard Clewer said: “The internet is so important today and has helped to revolutionise our lives.
“It’s crucial that no one feels left out of this technological revolution through lack of confidence.
“I helped my 93-year-old grandfather to search for new home insurance online, which has saved him more than £200.”
There was a presentation about the scheme at this month’s Salisbury Area Board meeting as well as information about the Harnham Silver Surfers Club.
The club started in 2011 when it ran an eight-week class for two hours every Wednesday but following its success, an evening class has also been set up to cope with demand. To find out more about the club, contact Helen Evans on 01722 323720 or email harnhamparish@btinternet.com .
