Salisbury "needs to hold its head high"

SALISBURY needs to hold its head high according to Wiltshire Council leader Jane Scott.

She was in the city to launch South Wilts Expo 2012 this morning, and told a business breakfast meeting about the positive effects the Queen's Jubilee visit and Olympic build up had had during the year.

"I have to say we did really well. More than 225,000 people - half the population of Wiltshire - turned out to see the Queen and to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay as it ran through 16 of our cities, towns and villages.

And the return on investment is substantial. The boost to the economy from the five-event days is estimated at well over £1million.

Cllr Scott added that the real challenge is to maintain the success and said the council will continue to work with all its partners, including businesses in the city.

"Today is the start of the work and we are very pleased to support Expo," she said.

Expo 2012 is running throughout today at Salisbury City Hall.

How depressing! Two boring events inspiring to only the most insipid of dullards.

How depressing that some adults think that this summer all the locals had to enjoy were two boring events. I am pleased to have good memories of the events held locally in 2012, and the fact that many people of all ages and abilities were able to attend Hubson's Field for a 'free' event in what was indeed an excellent day. As for the visit of HM The Queen, again a memorable day and where the County came to this fine city to welcome the Royal Party. Well done I say. Doctor Brule, in a way I feel sorry for you,but I look forward to 2013 and see what you can arrange for the rest of us to enjoy. The Journal may help you to promote.

I held my head up high in Wilthire until this current crop of grim reapers came in charge of Wiltshire Council.

Cut backs, unemployment, high parking charges and an MP who made a large claim for accommodation.

Well done to those who are employed to work for Wiltshire and Salisbury Council, but no praise for those elected members, who forget where Salisbury is

The majority of people live in the real world, not the world of visions and illusions. They simply want to get on with their lives without fear of or, interference from un-elected bodies or quangos. They want to protect and maintain their place in society. Fear of redundancy, wage cuts, rising prices, homelessness, service cuts and squandered taxes does not help.
Yes it's nice to be able to wave a flag now and again but, that in itself is a fleeting moment in the struggle to survive for many. I suspect more heads are held high if at the end of the year people can say I still have a home, a job, food and, a future.
