Residents object to homes plan

A ROW has broken out over a proposal for a housing development on land in Salisbury.

The former Highbury and Manor Fields schools site was sold for development to fund the cost of building the new Manor Fields Primary School, but residents of Highbury Avenue and Highfield Road have objected to the plans submitted to Wiltshire Council by Taylor Wimpey.

The company wants to build a 60-home development with the main vehicle access via Highbury Avenue. It also wants to open up Highfield Road to allow pedestrian access to and from the estate, but 27 residents have signed a petition calling for this aspect of the plan to be withdrawn.

Judith Glanville, one of the residents, said: “We are not opposed to the development but feel this road is unsuitable for additional pedestrian traffic.”

Salisbury City Council’s planning and transportation committee objected to the application at a meeting on Monday night.

Cllr Joe Rooney said: “Highfield Road is a very narrow road with very narrow pavements – it’s never had pedestrian access and it’s ridiculous to consider that it should be used as an access now.”

The committee voted unanimously to object to the plans, which will now go to Wiltshire Council’s southern area planning committee.

Highfield Road never had any pedestrian access?

So why was there a gate to the old school sites?

Small point of correction for the article

The site at last use was that of Highbury Primary School - it changed name when moving to the new site on the old Manor Playing fields.

The two schools prior to the demolition of the middle school were Highbury First School and Fisherton Manor middle school.

Before that it was Highbury Boys Schools
