Airfield marks 70 years
12:00pm Saturday 20th October 2012 in News
ON October 21, 70 years ago, the Royal Air Force airfield at Holmsley South became operational.
Now the Friends of the New Forest Airfields are holding an exhibition tomorrow to celebrate the landmark date.
The airfield was built by John Laing and Co and used by RAF Coastal Command as a training station and as a base for operations against U Boats in advance of the forthcoming allied invasion of North Africa.
As well as the RAF and Canadian squadrons based there, a squadron of American 8th Airforce B-24 Liberator bombers was also stationed there initially.
On October 21 The Friends will be opening their education centre at Merryfield Park, Derritt Lane, Bransgore between 10am and 4pm. This is their final open day of 2012, with a coffee morning as well.
