750 Musical highlights

Elgar's Dream of Gerontius (May 17) - Salisbury Musical Society (SMS) is singing two performances with the Berlin Philharmonischer Chor in May, one in Berlin and the second in the Cathedral on the 17.

One of the best loved of the English oratorios, Elgar's music reflects and enhances the dramatic text.

He famously wrote at the end of the manuscript This is the best of me.' Soloists - Jane Irwin (mezzo-soprano), Peter Auty (tenor) and Paul Whelan (bass).

In Salisbury the choirs will be joined by the Chelsea Opera Group Orchestra and conducted by David Halls. Tickets, price £20 - £8.

A Celebration of Vaughan Williams' (5 July) performed by SMS with Salisbury Symphony Orchestra (SSO), to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the composer's death. Tickets, price £15 - £6.50.

Piano Recital (13 July) by John Reid - Award winning ex-chorister performs a marvellous programme including Schubert's monumental Sonata in B flat, D960 and music by Bach and Schoenberg. Tickets £12.50 - £10.00.

Pre-Sunday evensong organ recitals
There are now half hour organ recitals at 2.30pm every Sunday before Evensong in the Cathedral during normal school term-time. Recitals will be shared between Daniel Cook, Assistant Director of Music, and the Organ Scholar.
