HAVING been a staff nurse on the In Patient Unit at Salisbury Hospice for over 20 years I feel I work very intuitively to communicate at a deep level with patients and their families to make them feel safe, secure and involved to the extent that they wish to be, and I am a passionate advocate for my patients and their carers.
My role involves admitting patients from the community or transfers from the hospital.
We make a careful assessment of their needs, to form an appropriate plan which may include palliative treatment, rehab, or end of life care.
We cater for a wide range of patients so my day is always varied, but revolves around working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to give personalised care for both the patients and their carers.
The hospice is a special place to work, caring for patients and their loved ones.
I have learnt a lot about what it means to be human and the importance of offering a safe, secure haven of care for all.
