IRIS Lawes, president, welcomed members to the March meeting and annual meeting of Downton (Evening) WI.

Forthcoming events to be held within the county were announced. It is a matter of regret that many of these take place at venues a considerable distance from Downton.

Nearer to home, a team of three members will represent the institute at the Quizzical Pursuits evening in Salisbury in June.

Details of the May meeting of the Downland Group were given. Downton (Evening) will be responsible for the sales table for which members were asked to provide cakes.

Cakes will also be needed for our stall at Downton Horticultural Society’s table top sale at the end of May.

Items for our tombola at the Downton Cuckoo Fair Boot Fair on May 5 are urgently required.

Members were reminded that our next monthly meeting will be on April 14, which will include a talk on the Child Contact Centre by Liz Sirman.

In her final president’s report before retiring on completion of her three-year term of office, Iris thanked the many members who contributed to the running of the institute both on and off the committee.

The programme for the next year was announced. It will include subjects as diverse as using a defibrillator and a talk on ferrets.

Betty Targett, retiring secretary, gave a summary of the year’s activities, and Joan Truscott, treasurer, reported that our finances were in good order.

Edna Pike was elected president, Gill Draper was elected secretary.

We welcome new members and visitors to all our meetings. Contact Edna on 01725 511332 for more information.
