MEMBERS of Salisbury Catholic Churches attending the recent annual meeting of SCORE (Salisbury Catholic Outreach) heard how funds raised in 2013 were used.

Firsthand accounts were given about some of the projects supported locally and overseas.

Mel Greenstock described the work of the Watt Road Activity Centre.

In particular she explained the work of the Happy Mondays group.

The group helps develop the literacy, numeracy and life skills of vulnerable adults.

A grant from SCORE helped install a heating system and a training kitchen in the new centre.

Grania Howard talked about her recent work on Africa Mercy. It is a hospital ship working in the Republic of Congo. The ship has five operating theatres. It performs corrective surgery to faces and limbs, as well as cataract operations. In addition, local surgeons are trained to carry on work in clinics after the ship has departed. SCORE paid the airfare for two specialist theatre staff volunteers working on the ship.

The meeting also heard about a new scheme to be launched in Salisbury.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP), supported by Churches Together Salisbury, will provide a debt management service to those in financial difficulty. SCORE has pledged funds to support the scheme.
