AT the June meeting of the Breakaway Club members listened to Phoebe Merrick of the Romsey Historical and Archaeological Group talk about the Remount Service based in Romsey.
The Remount Service was involved with the procurement, training and health of horses and their dispatch to the battlefields of France and Germany. Scouts were sent over to the States to identify and buy suitable horses, which were then shipped over to the UK.
Once in the country they were rested, examined and fed at various Remount Camps, one of which was at Pauncefoot Hill, near Ridge, on land acquired from the Broadlands Estate.
The horses were then despatched by ship to Le Havre or Dieppe.
The local Romsey community did much to raise money towards the upkeep of the horses.
