AT the recent AGM of the club the principal officers – chairman Mike Pope, secretary Jim Barnett, treasurer Kevin Huntley and match captain Steve Piper – were returned un-opposed.

The chairman confirmed the club is secure in the Salisbury Cycle and Social Club, Salt Lane for at least the next ten years.

It is recognised by the members and visiting teams that this venue is the best we have ever had and for that we have to thank our host club.

With the loss of some of the club’s stronger players, it has been necessary to drop what was the A Team but it still has three teams playing in the Southampton Division of the Hampshire Chess Association.

Teams will be playing in the second, third and fifth divisions.

In addition to the Club Championship Tournament, once again won last season by Bob Lynn, it is planned to run a few other 'one-off' events either in-house or inviting other clubs.

At the AGM the question of junior chess was raised and it was agreed that Andy Manning would investigate.

Parents reading this who have children of any age keen on the game should watch this space for further news or contact the club.

Currently our club night is from 7.30pm on Mondays but, if there is an interest from youngsters, the time could be brought forward to 6.30pm.

In addition to Monday club nights, members meet on Friday mornings in an atmosphere of friendly chess from 10.30am.

It really goes without saying we are always looking for new members and, of course, hoping some former members will re-join the only chess club in south Wiltshire.
